What a Water Filter Really Costs Per Year (The Number Nobody Prints on the Box)
Our picks, up front
The water filter business runs on the razor-and-blades model: sell the machine cheap, sell the filters forever. Nothing about that is dishonest — unless the yearly number is hidden. So here it is, for every product in our dataset, ranked by what a household actually spends each year after the purchase is forgotten. Figures verified November 2026.
The ranking that inverts the price tags
| Product | Ticket price | Filter cost per year |
|---|---|---|
| Big Berkey (Phoenix elements) | $267 | ~$13–50 |
| Waterdrop fridge filter (compatible) | $36 per 4-pack | ~$18 |
| Brita Elite pitcher/dispenser | $36–50 | ~$40 |
| SpringWell CF1 (whole-house) | ~$1,092–1,170 | ~$40 |
| Waterdrop C2SL (countertop RO) | $160 | ~$56 |
| APEC ROES-50 (under-sink RO) | $231 | ~$55 |
| PUR PLUS Faucet | ~$33–40 | ~$55–79 |
| iSpring RCC7AK (under-sink RO) | $240 | ~$62 |
| Waterdrop K19 (countertop RO) | $279 | ~$69–75 |
| PUR PLUS Pitcher | $40 | ~$70–108 |
| Bluevua RO100ROPOT | $389 | ~$90 |
| AquaTru Classic | $475 | ~$100–130 |
| everydrop Filter 4 (OEM fridge) | $57 each | ~$114–120 |
| Aquasana Shower AQ-4100 | $80 | $126 |
| Frizzlife WB99-C (countertop RO) | $390 | ~$130–146 |
| Waterdrop G3P800 (under-sink RO) | $849 | ~$160 |
| Clearly Filtered Pitcher | $110 | ~$156–260 |
| ZeroWater 12-Cup Pitcher | $37 | ~$185–240+ |
Read the table both ways. The $37 pitcher costs more per year than the $849 Waterdrop. The $267 Berkey nearly costs nothing to run. The ticket price tells you almost nothing about the cost of owning the thing.
Three stories inside the numbers
The fridge-filter gap. A genuine everydrop Filter 4 costs about $114–120 a year (two OEM filters). A Waterdrop compatible filter that fits the same fridge costs about $18 a year. The difference is certification breadth — the OEM filter is certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401; the compatible is 42 + 372. Whether that gap is worth 6× the money is a real question with a real answer: if your concern is lead or pharmaceuticals, the OEM's 53/401 listings are doing work the compatible doesn't claim. If it's taste, you're paying $100 a year for peace of mind you may not need.
The pitcher inversion. Pitcher hardware is nearly free; pitcher filters are where the money lives. ZeroWater's filters burn out in 15–40 gallons depending on your water's TDS, so its yearly cost swings from ~$185 to genuinely shocking at high usage. Brita's Elite, changing twice a year, is the cheapest water in the pitcher world. Same shelf at the store, 5× difference in yearly cost.
The shower surprise. Aquasana's $80 shower filter takes a $62.99 cartridge twice a year — $126 annually, more than most under-sink RO systems cost to run. It's a good filter (NSF/ANSI 177, >90% chlorine). Just know the subscription you're actually signing.
How we compute these
Yearly cost = the manufacturer's replacement schedule × verified filter prices, checked against retailer listings. Where a range exists (usage, water quality, pack sizes), we publish the range instead of a fake-precise point. Every figure here traces to a product record in our open dataset — including the ones that make popular products look expensive.
The buying rule
Price the second year, not the first. Total cost over three years = ticket + 3 × yearly filters. Run that math on the countertop, under-sink, and pitcher guides and the "best value" answer changes in every single category.
